“Game of Thrones” Leads Emmy Nominations

Helen Sloan/HBO(LOS ANGELES) — The nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Thursday morning in West Hollywood, California by Orange Is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba and So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, with help from Television Academy Chairman/CEO Bruce Rosenblum.

HBO’s epic fantasy drama, Game of Thrones, leads all nominees with 24, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series, acting nods for stars Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Diana Rigg and Peter Dinklage.

David Letterman, who retired from Late Show earlier this year, and Stephen Colbert, who left The Colbert Report to replace him, each received nods for their shows.

Diversity was celebrated in this year’s nominations with nods for Orange Is the New Black‘s Aduba, Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, How to Get Away with Murder‘s Viola Davis and guest star Cicely Tyson, Getting On‘s Niecy Nash, Bessie’s Queen Latifah, and Scandal’s Khandi Alexander. black-ish star Anthony Anderson also earned a nomination.

Still, there were some snubs. Fox’s hit hip-hop musical Empire, which pundits expected would receive an Outstanding Drama Series nod, was left out of the category. The Americans, The Walking Dead, The Affair and Grace and Frankie also were missing from the list. Jane the Virgin also got snubbed in the Outstanding Comedy, along with star Gina Rodriguez, who won in the actress category last year.

And while AMC’s Mad Men will have a last chance of glory, HBO’s The Newsroom will not — it got left out of the Outstanding Drama Series category as well. The news was better for star Jeff Daniels, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

The Emmy Awards, hosted by Andy Samberg, will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 20. Fox will air the ceremony live from coast to coast.
