Bill Hader Reveals Unusual Audition Process for “Trainwreck”

ABC/Randy Holmes(NEW YORK) — Bill Hader said director Judd Apatow had an unusual way to find out it he had onscreen chemistry with his Trainwreck co-star and onscreen love interest, Amy Schumer.

“Judd took Amy and I on a date. He took us to [the restaurant] Babbo and watched us eat and didn’t say anything,” the comedian said on Wednesday’s Live with Kelly and Michael. “He didn’t talk and Amy and I were talking and we didn’t know each other. So it was like, ‘How are you? Oh I know that person too. Oh, that’s great.’ And Judd was just watching us…And then every once in a while he would take a picture. So creepy!”

“And then we went to the Girls season three premiere party,” Hader continued, “and he was walking around with a picture, going, ‘Would you buy these two as a couple?'”

The Saturday Night Live alum plays a sports doctor in Trainwreck who falls in love with a columnist, played by Schumer, who doesn’t believe in monogamy and is assigned to write an article about him.

Hader said he had an amazing experience working with Schumer, who wrote and stars in the film. “I knew her from her show and her stand-up. I had no idea — she’s like a classically trained actor who decided to do stand-up,” he revealed.  “She’s an amazing actor. So you’re gonna see it in the movie. …The whole year, I’ve been going, ‘Wait til you see her.'”

Trainwreck, also starring LeBron James, is out Friday.
