“The West Wing,” “Cheers” Actor Roger Rees Dead at 71

Gerald Martineau/The Washington Post/Getty ImagesRoger Rees, a Tony Award-winning actor who appeared on the TV series Cheers and The West Wing, has died.

The Welsh-born actor and director passed away Friday at his New York City home following a battle with cancer, his rep tells The New York Times. He was 71.  

On Cheers, Rees played the English millionaire Robin Colcord, a rival of Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. He later played a British Ambassador Lord John Marbury on The West Wing.

His other TV credits included Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy.

The stage actor won a Tony for playing the titular character in a Broadway production of Charles Dickens’ The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. He earned an Emmy nomination for a TV adaptation of the play.

Earlier this year, Rees starred on Broadway in the musical The Visit. He left the show in May for health reasons.
