Bill Murray Defends Miley Cyrus: “She Can Really Sing”

RCA Records; Albert L. Ortega/Getty ImagesSay what you may about Miley Cyrus, but she’s got a heavyweight fan in her corner: Bill Murray.

Appearing at Comic Con in San Diego Thursday, Murray noted Cyrus is a guest on his upcoming Netflix Christmas special, and then revealed that her talent blew everyone away.

“I’m gonna say this officially: Miley Cyrus is good,” he told the audience. “I was not particularly convinced. [But] Miley Cyrus is really f***ing good. She can really sing.”

In fact, Murray said, Miley impressed everyone on the set.  “I thought she was just a knucklehead crazy girl and…the kind of girl you’d wanna go on a road trip with and maybe didn’t have ID or something, you know?” he said as the audience laughed. “But she can really sing and she floored everybody. She just floored everybody. Paul Shaffer and George Clooney, all these guys were like, ‘Holy Christ, she’s really good.’”

Murray went so far as to admonish the crowd to stop taking shots at Miley: “I don’t wanna hear any more bad rapping of Miley Cyrus, ok?”

Of course, Miley’s fans have known for years how great her voice is: it’s just gotten overshadowed in the past few years by the twerking and the nudity.

Murray’s special, A Very Murray Christmas, pays tribute to the classic variety show and features Murray as the host.  Besides Miley, Clooney and Shaffer, the guest cast includes Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones and Maya Rudolph.

Murray was at Comic Con to promote his film Rock the Kasbah, which will be released in October.
