Jon Hamm Warns He May Sound Different in “Minions”

Universal(NEW YORK) — Jon Hamm voices evil inventor Herb Overkill in his latest film, Minions. But Mad Men fans may not recognize his voice in the animated movie.

“That was three of four years ago, that was when I had a polyp on my vocal cords,” he said on Tuesday’s Live with Kelly and Michael. “It was very scratchy and different, which actually worked.”

Hamm’s onscreen wife is voiced by Sandra Bullock, who portrays villain Scarlet Overkill. The two recorded their parts separately, as is customary in many animated films.

“We were married on the movie and we never worked together. We never saw each other,” Hamm said, laughing. “It was a very typical marriage. We just literally never saw one another at all.”

Minions is a spin-off of the Despicable Me franchise, which features the Minions. The film follows the tiny yellow fan-favorite creatures as they travel through time, killing the baddest villains in history, including T. Rex, Napoleon and Dracula.

Minions took years to create. “It takes a very long time to make an animated film. In fact it took like I think the better part of four years to make Minions because there’s so many things that have to [be done,] Hamm explained. “You know, there’s computer animations, and those take a long time, and all the voice acting and the script, and everything has to come together.”

Minions, also starring Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Carell, is out July 10.
