Arnold Schwarzenegger Fights Himself in “Terminator: Genisys”

ABC/Fred Lee(NEW YORK) — Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in Terminator: Genisys — but instead of fighting a new enemy, he’s battling himself.

“It was a great idea for the writers to come up like the Terminator that protects the machines and the Terminator that protects the human beings and there’s a major conflict that leads to this epic battle,” he said of the film on Thursday’s Good Morning America.

But how was Schwarzenegger able to fight a younger version of his terminator self? Movie magic, of course.

“While we were doing this whole fight scene over a period of four days, I always was wondering how are they gonna do the face replacement and head replacement. The amazing thing is the technology and visual effects and the CGI and all this stuff is so advanced now,” Schwarzenegger said.

The 67-year-old actor and former world-champion bodybuilder said he initially thought he’d have to slim down to shoot the film, but director Alan Taylor had something else in mind.

“The director came to me and said, ‘I want you to have the same frame you had in 1984.’ And so I had to literally gain 10 pounds,” Schwarzenegger explained. “So I worked out twice as hard [and] twice as heavy. I did two hours of weight trading everyday and, of course, worked endlessly with the stunt coordinator and with the stunt people to do the fight scenes and choreographing all the stuff so a lot of work goes into those things.”

Terminator: Genisys hits theaters July 1.
