Brian Williams Won't Return to NBC Nightly News

NBC(NEW YORK) — Brian Williams will not return to the NBC Nightly News anchor chair when his suspension ends in August.

NBC News announced Thursday that Williams instead will join MSNBC as an anchor of breaking news and special reports. He’ll begin in that role in mid-August.

Lester Holt, who had been filling in for Williams on NBC Nightly News since Williams was suspended in February for falsely claiming he had been in a helicopter hit by enemy fire while covering the Iraq War in 2003, has been named the permanent anchor of the program.

Williams said in a statement, “I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust.”

Williams sat down with Matt Lauer for an interview that will air Friday on the Today show and NBC Nightly News.
