Eric Dane Gives a Sneak Peek of “The Last Ship's” Season Two Premiere

Maarten De Boer/TNT(NEW YORK) — On the season one finale of TNT’s The Last Ship, the crew of the USS Nathan James found cure for the virus that wiped out 80 percent of the world’s population.  So what’s left to do for Sunday night’s season two premiere?  Plenty, apparently.

“We pick up where we left off and our job is to inoculate what’s left of the world and reestablish order and then create a civilization and set up a government and all those really fun things,” Eric Dane, who portrays Commanding Officer Tom Chandler, said on Tuesday’s Live with Kelly and Michael.

“And along the way we run into a group of immunes, some people who are naturally immune to the virus and consider themselves demigods,” he continued. “So it’s sort of like this cult that we find ourselves up against that has some really neat toys and some pretty big weapons and fun stuff.”

One of the aspects of The Last Ship Dane‘s most proud of is the way they portray their military environment.  “According to the secretary of the Navy, we’re doing a good job [of making the show realistic,]” Dane said. ” So I’m very proud of this show and I’m proud of the people I work with.”

Dane, who portrayed beloved character Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy before being killed off in 2012, said he’s largely unrecognizable when he’s in uniform on the San Diego naval base where the show films. “I get a lot of salutes when I’m in the uniform walking down the pier to get on the ship,” he said.  But now that the series has gotten a season two, the servicemen are catching on.

“Now when I go down to San Diego and I’m on the naval base, they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s the actor,'” Dane admitted. “But I would get saluted all the time, I wouldn’t know what to do. Do I salute back? I’m not really a captain, but for a while it felt good, I just went with it.”

The Last Ship returns to TNT Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern.
