“Orange Is the New Black” Cast Discusses New Season

Jill Greenberg/NetflixFans of Orange Is The New Black were pleasantly surprised on Thursday night, when the Netflix series’ third season was released a little early.

The debut of the new episodes coincided with a celebration of Orange Is The New Black in New York City dubbed “OrangeCon.” There, ABC Radio caught up with several of the show’s stars.

Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper, said series creator and writer Jenji Kohan brought a “lighter” theme for season three. She explained, “I think Jenji deals a lot with faith and motherhood. There’s a lighter quality to it.”

Having said that, Uzo Aduba said her character, Crazy Eyes, is trying to “pick up the pieces” after “the storm has passed from season two.”

If you’ll recall, in the season-two finale Vee attacked Red and nearly killed her, then managed to convince Crazy Eyes that she was the one who did it. Crazy Eyes confessed, much to the dismay of Janae and Cindy, but Healy saved her by having an officer forge paperwork that said that Crazy Eyes couldn’t have committed the crime.

Aduba continued, “It’s been interesting to watch her as the season progressed, find her faith and re-establish it and where it is…how she wants to grow it.”

Kate Mulgrew, a.k.a. Red, gushed about her role on the show. She told ABC Radio, “I’ve been in this business for over 40 years….To want with hunger to play this part? I want her. I want her and I want her to go on, so, of course I’m passionate.”

Laura Prepon commented that it’s rare to find a program that has so many strong, multidimensional women on it. Prepon, who plays Alex, said, “[A]s an actress it’s so freeing to portray this character every day.”
