Robert Duvall Says It Was 'Difficult' to Direct New Movie, “Wild Horses”

Michael Becker/FOX (NEW YORK) — Robert Duvall is back in the director’s saddle with Wild Horses. It’s a story centered on a Texas rancher hiding secrets, as a detective opens up a 15-year-old missing persons case.

The film is Duvall’s first directorial effort since 2002’s Assassination Tango. The Oscar winner admitted it was difficult to direct once again, especially since he’s also starring in the film.

“I thought I was gonna have to put up a mirror so I could yell at the director anytime I wanted, but I didn’t do that. …It was difficult,” he said on Wednesday’s Live with Kelly and Michael. “For The Judge, we had 60 days to do it. Here we only had 23 days so you really had to rush.”

Duvall starred in The Judge last year opposite Robert Downey Jr.

James Franco, Josh Hartnett and Duvall’s wife, Luciana Pedraza Duvall, all star in Wild Horses.

As tough as Duvall found it to direct himself, he said it was “very difficult” to direct his wife on set. He added, “It’s like playing doubles in tennis. She doesn’t listen. But she’s very supportive but she didn’t listen to me.”

Wild Horses, which Duvall also co-wrote, received mixed reviews when it premiered last March at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

“Once again it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s my cup of tea,” said Duvall.

Wild Horses opens nationwide Friday.
