Tracy Morgan Gives First Post-Crash TV Interview: 'I Can't Believe I'm Here'

Stephen Lovekin/Comedy Central(NEW YORK) — Tracy Morgan continues to recover from last summer’s crash in which he was seriously injured. Monday, he made his first TV appearance to give an update on his physical and emotional recovery.

“I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe I’m in front of you,” he said on NBC’s Today show.

Morgan said he doesn’t remember the actual June 7, 2014 crash, in which he suffered multiple broken bones and a traumatic brain injury after a Walmart truck slammed into his limo on the New Jersey Turnpike. The former 30 Rock star said he had to watch YouTube videos to be aware of what happened.  Morgan also watched the funeral video of his friend, fellow comedian James MacNair, who was killed in the crash that also injured two others.

Morgan and Walmart recently reached a confidential settlement for all parties involved in the lawsuit, but Morgan became emotional when he remembered his late friend.

“The case is settled, but the pain is always going to be there for Jimmy Mac,” Morgan said, tearfully. “You know, he was a close friend of mine, a comrade in comedy, and he was a loving man and he was a warm man. He was a good man. It just hurts me to see that he’s gone. That’s it.”

During his interview, Morgan thanked many for helping him recover, including his 30 Rock co-star Tina Fey, whom he said helped him “get his spirits up.”

Despite having clearly come a long way in the past year, Morgan said he has a ways to go.

“There are times where I had my good days and my bad days, where I forget things. You know, there are times where I have the headaches and the nosebleeds,” he explained. “And I wouldn’t even let my lady know because I don’t want her to be worried about it. But I have my good days and my bad days.”

Morgan added that he’s still committed to returning to comedy.

“I love comedy. I’ll never stop loving her. I love comedy and I can’t wait to get back to her, but right now my goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet, I’m not,” he admitted. “And when I’m there, you’ll know it.”
