George Clooney Handcuffs Himself to David Letterman

Jeffrey R. Staab/CBS(NEW YORK) — George Clooney can’t bear to see David Letterman leave late-night TV.

Appearing as a guest on CBS’ Late Show Thursday night, Clooney handcuffed himself to the soon-to-be-retired host and tossed away the key. He declared, “You’re not going anywhere, David Letterman!”

Letterman shot back to the actor, who married his wife Amal Clooney last year, “Is this something left over from the bachelor days?”

The Tomorrowland star explained that when he was a single man he would tape Letterman’s show and watch it later on. He continued, “I’m a married man now. I’m home. I’m home with my wife, I turn on the TV and now I hear you’re not going to be there? That’s not OK.”

Clooney later turned serious, telling Letterman that the host provided laughs through the years while also helping viewers deal with difficult moments like 9/11.

“You may be going off the air, but you belong to us for the ages,” Clooney said to applause.

Clooney touched upon his marriage, joking that while his wife is a human rights lawyer and takes risks in that capacity, he “handcuffs himself to a guy who’s leaving town.”

Clooney remained handcuffed to Letterman while Letterman interviewed his second guest, musician Tom Waits. Clooney was by Letterman’s side, behind his desk, while Waits sat in the chair Clooney occupied just minutes earlier.

Thursday night’s Late Show also featured a cameo from Al Pacino, who helped Letterman present the Top Ten List by counting down the numbers. The topic was “Top Ten Reasons Max Is Mad,” in reference to the new Mad Max movie.
