James Spader Made a Film for His Kids with “Avengers” Sequel

Justin Stephens/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — James Spader had strong motivation for joining the cast of the Avengers sequel: He wanted to take part in a movie that would appeal to his kids.

The Blacklist star voices the titular, killer robot in Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters now. He tells ABC Radio he was “intrigued” after watching past Marvel films such as Iron Man and the first Avengers movie.

Spader adds, “I’d never made a film for my kids. And I thought that would be really great, to be able to do a film that my kids would be excited about.”

Though Ultron seeks to destroy humanity, Spader believes his character can be funny and eloquent at times.

He argues, “We may not like the idea that maybe another species might be more successful at this than us, but he’s presenting that as a possibility.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron reunited Spader with Robert Downey Jr., his co-star in the 1980s movies Tuff Turf and Less Than Zero. Spader shares that while they drifted apart in the ensuing years, Age of Ultron “brought us back together again and it was probably, in the long run, I guess it probably is going to end up being the most important aspect of doing this film, probably, is that.”

Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
