Studio Sticking with Release Date for Earthquake Film Despite Nepal Tragedy

“San Andreas” – Warner Bros.(NEW YORK) — Warner Bros. does not plan to change the release date of its earthquake-themed film San Andreas despite the devastating earthquake in Nepal on Saturday that killed more than 5,500 people.

A spokesperson for the studio tells Variety it considered changing the release date, but opted to debut the film — which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and focuses on an earthquake in California — on May 29 as scheduled.

A spokesman said in a statement to the trade publication, “We will continue to evaluate our worldwide marketing campaign to ensure that we are sensitive to those affected by this tragic event.”

The trailers and poster art for the film will not be changed, according to Variety sources, but promotional materials will include information on how people can take part in relief efforts for Nepal. The studio has adjusted its already-planned PSA campaign on how to prepare for natural disasters; the campaign will now reference the Nepal quake.

Variety
also notes that Universal is still scheduled to release the disaster film Everest, centered around Mount Everest, on Sept. 18.
