To Score Tickets to “Star Wars” Premiere, Fans Send X-Wing into Space

LucasFilm(NEW YORK) — Two Brits behind a science website called Project Helium Tears devised a literally out of this world way to try to get a pair of tickets to the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakensthey launched a scale model of an X-Wing fighter into space.

The fans used a massive balloon to send the model up and away, and a GoPro camera to shoot the model flying against the striking backdrop of the earth and the sun — with no computer-generated trickery necessary. Because of the model’s scale and position in space, and with the inclusion of John Williams’ Star Wars score, the illusion is very much from that “galaxy far, far away.”

During the short film of the fighter’s journey, they addressed director J.J. Abrams with an onscreen message in the form of a Star Wars title “crawl.”

“Hey JJ: Can we have 2 tickets to the VIP premiere of The Force Awakens? Ordinarily, the answer would be no, so we thought we’d try something extraordinary…We know you like using practical effects and shooting in real locations,” adding “We really love that there are X-Wings in the new film.”

No word yet from Team Abrams or Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released Dec. 18 by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
