“Saturday Night Live” Skit Targets Scientology

NBC (NEW YORK) — Saturday Night Live didn’t hold anything back this past weekend when it aired a fake ad obviously aimed at Scientology.

The fake ad was for a made-up religion called the Church of Neurotology, an obvious satire of L. Ron Hubbard’s controversial faith.

A group of people, including SNL cast members Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, are shown singing an ode to the church in a fake 1990 music video with lines such as, “A gorgeous religion, old and true, started in 1982.”

As they sing, updates about some of the individuals who have spoken out against the church since the video was supposedly shot are shown on the screen. The graphics included updates such as: “Not allowed to see family,” “Thrown off boat” and “Hiding in desert as woman.”

The sketch comes in the wake of HBO’s March 30 premiere of the Scientology documentary Going Clear from director Alex Gibney in which former members claim to have been abused and kept from seeing their families after leaving the religion.

Michael Keaton hosted this past weekend’s edition of SNL.
