“The Mindy Project’s” Chris Messina Says He's Hopeful Show Will Get Renewed

Emily Shur/FOX(NEW YORK) — Many fans are waiting feverishly to see if Fox will renew The Mindy Project for a fourth season. No one yet knows the fate of the comedy created by Mindy Kaling, including her onscreen love interest Chris Messina.

“I feel confident that whatever is meant to be will be. And I feel that Mindy and the writers have, I’m sure, tons of things they want to say about all these characters,” Messina tells ABC Radio, confirming he doesn’t have a clue if the show will get picked up again. “Fox has to just kind of see what they have and what’s there. But they’ve been great to us.”

“I think Fox is a really pretty cool network,” he continues. “I mean they really push the boundaries and I like what they do. And I’m proud they let Mindy and her team push the boundaries and I’m proud to be on a show that does that.”

The slow renewal of The Mindy Project has led many fans to believe that the season three finale could have possibly been the series finale. On the March 24 episode (SPOILER ALERT!), Messina’s Danny lets down Mindy as he was supposed to meet her parents in Boston since the two are now expecting a baby together. But he doesn’t show. Still, the episode has a happy ending when Danny treks to India to introduce himself to Mindy’s parents, telling them: “Hi, I’m Danny Castellano, and I’m in love with your daughter.”

Messina tells ABC Radio he can see why some viewers say it could’ve been the series finale. “Yeah, it definitely could’ve been an ending and it also could be a beginning, you know? Mindy wrote that last episode and I think she was excited about it and had an idea,” he explains. “And I love that she took Danny to India. That was really fun to do.”

If The Mindy Project does get another season, Messina has some ideas for what happens to his character. “I definitely would like him to have some sense of peace because he [has] an neurosis, like we all do,” he says. “But it’d be nice to see the character find some peace. I think he’s found peace in her, Mindy, and I think he’ll find real peace in a baby and that might be nice to explore.”

Messina is also doing some exploring of his own as he recently stepped behind the camera to make his directorial debut in Alex of Venice, out April 17. Still, the actor says don’t expect him to direct episodes of Mindy. “I would consider it. I don’t think I’d be any good at it. It’s such a different format,” he admits. “Yeah, it wouldn’t be in my comfort zone so maybe that would be good, but [it’s] very different than my movie.”
