Tyler Golden/FOX(LOS ANGELES) — The cast of Glee says they felt Cory Monteith’s presence while filming the series finale of the Fox show.
Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, Jenna Ushkowitz and Darren Criss appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday to talk about the final episode, which includes a tribute to Monteith, a cast member who died in July 2013.
“There’s a moment in the last episode that we had [to honor Monteith], and then obviously when we wrapped we all took a moment,” Overstreet told DeGeneres.
“He was there, though, we could feel him,” Colfer added. “He was there.”
Monteith died from a mixture of heroin and alcohol. He was 31 years old.
There were plenty of tears during the filming of the final episode. “We were watching Matt Morrison sing us all a song so we were very much in our own world experiencing this,” Criss said of the final scene they filmed. “And one take they pulled a fast one on us, they took Matt out of it and put basically the entire crew and production there looking at us.”
“It’s as if you take every family member and friend that you’ve ever loved and that you have to say goodbye to and put them all in front of you at once,” Ushkowitz added.
Michele said the moment was very emotional that the director had to yell cut. “We are loud criers, me and Jenna,” Michele admitted.
For Criss, who says he rarely cries, it “was really cathartic…just to cry it out.”
Glee will wrap up after six seasons on March 20.
