Julie Andrews Says “The Sound of Music” Anniversary Feels Like a ‘Terrible Joke’

ABC / Ida Mae Astute(NEW YORK) — The Sound of Music is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, though Julie Andrews can hardly believe it.

“I think it’s a terrible joke somebody’s playing on me because it doesn’t feel like that,” she told ABC Radio on Tuesday regarding the film’s milestone anniversary. “And although I, of course, vividly remember doing all those anniversaries…it still doesn’t feel like 50 years.”

Andrews said she feels lucky to have starred in The Sound of Music as Maria von Trapp, the postulant-turned-governess-turned captain’s wife. She added, “It made the beginning of my career and it’s been a good friend ever since.”

A 50th anniversary edition of The Sound of Music is now available on Blu-ray. Next Wednesday, ABC will air a primetime special, The Untold Story of The Sound of Music, featuring Andrews.
