Julie Andrews Says Lady Gaga's a ‘Very New Good Friend;’ Tony Bennett to Sing at Gaga's Wedding

ABC/Craig Sjodin(NEW YORK) — After Lady Gaga brought the house down the night of the Oscars with her Sound of Music medley last month, the star of the movie, Julie Andrews, publicly thanked her onstage.  But it turns out that Gaga had actually called the screen legend ahead of time, to make sure that she was okay with her planned performance.

“I’ve been a fan for a long time but I did not know her, and I only actually met her physically 45 seconds before she went on stage,” Andrews tells ABC Radio about her relationship with Gaga as of the night of the Academy Awards.  However, says Andrews, “She had done me the honor of phoning me about 10 days before, asking if I minded the fact that she was doing The Sound of Music medley and she hoped she didn’t offend.”

“She was singing all the songs in my original keys,” Andrews recalled. “And I said on the phone, ‘That’s very high.’ She said, ‘Well, yes, I wanted to do them as a tribute to you.'”

Andrews was knocked out by Gaga’s performance of “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain,” as she tells ABC Radio. “The minute I got home from the Oscars I called her…I confirmed that I thought she was fantastic and had done a wonderful job, and I couldn’t thank her enough.”

“She really did a wonderful thing with the medley. She sang superbly and then so lovingly handed me the evening on a platter, if you know what I’m saying,” says the Oscar-winner. “As I say, I’ve been a fan for a long time but she’s now a very new good friend.”

So, does Andrews think that Gaga has a career in musicals? Well, yes.

“I’ve been saying it ever since,” she says. “I have, truthfully!”

And in other “entertainment legends who are friends with Lady Gaga” news, her duet partner Tony Bennett tells the New York Post that Gaga and her fiance, actor Taylor Kinney, have asked him to sing at their wedding.

“They invited me to do it and, of course, I will,” he tells the paper, adding, “She’s marrying a very wonderful man, very talented and very handsome. I think he’s going be highly successful in films. He’s a very nice person.”  Bennett says of the nuptials, “All I know is, knowing Lady Gaga, it will be fabulous.”
