One film at the center of the issue is Selma, which was excluded from the best actor and best director race despite the acclaimed work of David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay, respectively.

DuVernay took an optimistic tone on the red carpet, telling ABC News Radio, “I think any conversation about diversity and inclusion and representation is a positive thing.”

John Ridley, who won a screenplay Oscar last year for 12 Years a Slave, said that while progress is being made in Hollywood, those in show business “have to make sure we’re moving in a progressive direction.”

Presenter Kevin Hart added, “There can never be too much diversity. It’s a goal that people should work towards and that we should all want.”
