Halle Berry Recalls Horrific Domestic Violence in Her Childhood

Andreas Rentz/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Halle Berry has long been vocal about her abusive father. But now she’s sharing more details about her troubled childhood.

“I’m a victim of domestic violence,” the Oscar winner said, according to E! News, after she was honored at the unite4:humunity gala for her volunteer work at the Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic violence intervention program in Los Angeles.

“I wasn’t married to a man that beat me up, but my mother was,” Berry added.

The movie star told the L.A. crowd that at just five years old, she saw her mother beaten “day after day after day,” “kicked down stairs” and even hit with a wine bottle when she wasn’t looking.

“Knowing that she wanted nothing more than for her little girls to see her be empowered and be a woman of strength, but having no way to make that happen was heartbreaking for me,” Berry explained.

“She stayed for too long and her children, my sister and I, saw far too much and I’ve suffered the damage of being a child of domestic violence,” Berry added.
