Neil Patrick Harris Talks About Developing Oscar Jokes

ABC/Bob D’Amico(LOS ANGELES) — Neil Patrick Harris visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday to chat about his role as host of this Sunday’s Academy Awards, which will be broadcast on ABC.

Kimmel and Harris noted that the Oscars occur at the end of the awards season and Harris joked that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler often use all the good jokes about movies when they host the Golden Globes.

Harris also shared that he’s “concerned” about doing the right thing when it comes to making jokes about stars.

“I’m concerned and always pondering what’s the right thing to do,” Harris told Kimmel. “Whether something’s too caustic, too acerbic, do you make jokes at people because they’re funny, even if they’re funny jokes or because they’re nominated for an Academy Award and…it’s a special night. They really don’t want to be made fun of.”

Kimmel reminded Harris that “the audience wants you to be mean and the people in the room don’t necessarily want you to be mean.”

Harris joked with Kimmel that he’s hoping for a scandal this week to provide source material for jokes. Kimmel joked that a big story would be if Harris got “caught not being gay.”

Harris replied that he tried that in the movie Gone Girl.  Harris plays a demented ladies’ man in the film.
