Dakota Johnson Dishes on Charlie Hunnam Quitting “Fifty Shades of Grey”

Universal(NEW YORK) — Originally, Charlie Hunnam was set to star alongside Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey.

However, he bowed out of the project early and Jamie Dornan landed the role of Christian Grey.

“That was a confusing moment,” Johnson admitted to David Leterman on Tuesday. “I think his schedule conflicted. He was busy.”

Ultimately, the project was very successful: It earned an estimated $94.4 million over the four-day holiday weekend. It was a well-deserved reward for the actress, who said the audition process took about two months.

“The first few auditions, I did a monologue from Persona which was really random but kinda the same vibe and the rest of it was just reading with a lot of really handsome men,” she said. “Then once I got the role [and] then it was another month to find Jamie.”

And while it took awhile for everything to come together, Johnson said it was well worth it.

“It turned out OK,” she said.
