Portia De Rossi Explains How She Nabbed “Scandal” Role

ABC/Adam Taylor(NEW YORK) — Fans were delighted to learn last year that Portia De Rossi would be joining the cast of ABC’s Scandal, but the actress admits that landing a role on Shonda Rhimes’ hit show wasn’t an easy feat.

“My agent kind of hounded her agent for a while to get this meeting set up. I took the meeting. I thought it went really well, and then I didn’t hear for a few months,” she explained on Thursday’s Good Morning America. “And [Rhimes] said, ‘You know, it might take me a while to work you into the story,’ and then I thought, ‘OK. This is good.’ But then I didn’t hear. And then I kind of forgot about it a little bit.”

De Rossi added that her agent finally “called and says, ‘I have Scandal news.'”

The actress portrays Elizabeth North, the head of the Republican National Convention. She’s caught in a love triangle with Vice President Andrew Nichols, played by Jon Tenney, and first lady Mellie Grant, portrayed by Bellamy Young.

De Rossi said that while viewers initially hated her character for causing so many shake-ups inside and outside the White House, she has another side to her that’s coming out this season.

“People thought Lizzy Bear, my character, was just all bad. And you know, I think we’re starting to see that she has a conscience, that she does draw the line,” she added.

ABC’s Scandal returns Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
