Archdiocese Urges Catholics to Skip “Fifty Shades of Grey”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” – Focus Features(CINCINNATI) — Fifty Shades of Grey, the much-anticipated movie based on the erotic best-selling book of the same name by E.L. James, opens nationwide Friday, but the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is urging Catholics to skip the film.

Michael Vanderburgh, spokesman for the archdiocese, says the Catholic church isn’t opposed to sex, just sex before marriage.

“Sex and sex acts themselves are wonderfully beautiful in context,” says Vanderburgh, adding, “and we believe a context for that is in marriage — a sacrificial union of a man and a woman reflecting our unity with God and his plan for us to know, love, and serve him and to procreate.”

Vanderburgh says the movie is “focused on the gratification aspects of sex.”

In 50 Shades, Dakota Johnson stars as college student Anastasia Steele, who enters into a submissive relationship with billionaire Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan.
