Melanie Griffith Says She Won't See “Fifty Shades of Grey”

JOCE/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images(LOS ANGELES) — Although millions will be headed to theaters this week to see Fifty Shades of Grey, one of the most anticipated films this year, there’s one person who won’t be grabbing a ticket — Melanie Griffith, the mother of Dakota Johnson, who plays college student Anastasia Steele in the film.

“No, she doesn’t want me to see it,” Griffith told reporters at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party of her daughter with actor Don Johnson.

“I don’t want to see it. I would be very uncomfortable seeing it,” she continued. “I am so proud of her and supporting her in every way that I can.”

In the film adaptation of the E.L. James novel, Johnson plays many risque scenes as her character enters into an unlikely, and unusual, sexual relationship with business magnate Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan.

Although it’s Dakota’s breakout role, Griffith said her daughter didn’t need much advice. “She’s been on movie sets her whole life. She’s observed everything. And she didn’t need too much advice; a few things but not anything I could really take credit for,” she explained.

Still, Dakota told Glamour last month that when it came for her to film scenes in the Red Room — Grey’s hangout for bondage and submission — she got some great advice from her mom. “The scenes in that room were definitely the most vulnerable scenes in the movie. But it was a very closed set. My mom told me that it’s my right to ask for that during intimate scenes, so it seemed like [Dornan and Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director, and I] were in this little world together.”

Fifty Shades of Grey arrives in theaters Friday.
