ABC/Bob D’Amico(NEW YORK) — On ABC’s new hit series, black-ish, Anthony Anderson portrays the father of four kids, desperately trying to hold onto his black culture as his kids grow up in an upscale neighborhood.

The actor knows why millions of viewers have taken to the new comedy series.

“You know, [we’re] just telling truthful stories as honestly as we possibly can and I think that’s whats resonating with our audience,” Anderson said on Tuesday’s Good Morning America.

A special Valentine’s Day episode of black-ish airs Wednesday.

“As you can imagine, if you’re familiar with the show, anything that can go wrong will go wrong with Andre Johnson,” the actor says of his character’s Valentine’s Day plans in the episode. “Yeah, last-minute details…things like that. I put my foot in my mouth.”

The series won multiple NAACP Image Awards last weekend in Hollywood. black-ish received the award for outstanding comedy series, while Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, who portrays his wife, won acting awards. Anderson said the wins mean a lot to him.

“You know, I grew up apart of the youth moment of the NAACP,” he began. “This was my tenth nomination. I hadn’t won an award, an Image Award, up until Friday night.”

“I was the Susan Lucci,” he quipped, referencing the All My Children star who finally won an Emmy Award in 1999 after 18 failed nominations.

ABC’s black-ish airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
