Kerry Washington Talks Olivia Pope's Evolving Style on “Scandal”

ABC/Adam Taylor(LOS ANGELES) — On the last week’s episode of Scandal, Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope had traded in her tan trench coats for rags as she was being held captive by a terrorist in an unknown land. It’s precisely why the Golden Globe-nominated actress can’t exactly say how her character’s style will evolve this season.

“She’s in such a transitional period. She’s dealing with a lot,” Washington tells People magazine. “In the last few episodes, she’s kind of re-defining who she is, so it’s hard to say.”

Off-screen, Washington is helping launch the spring collection of The Limited’s collaboration with the hit ABC drama. The Limited Scandal collection is designed by Washington and Scandal’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo.

“I’m very partial to the sweaters this spring. They’re really beautiful and light, and they’re beautiful for layering. They’re gorgeous,” Washington says of the new collection.

As far as her personal style, Washington says she’s much more daring than her character, Olivia. “I have a lot more fun with patterns and colors,” she said. “I wear a lot of upcoming designers.”

“If I don’t like it, I don’t wear it, so it’s maybe a risk out there in the world, but the point is I have to feel good about it,” she added. “It’s not going to change me if other people like it or not.”

The actress also admits to having more pairs of Christian Louboutin heels than she can count. Her favorites are “a kitten heel with spikes,” and the pair she “got married in.”
