Why “Into the Woods” Star Anna Kendrick Will Never Make an Album, Despite Success of “Cups”

Buena Vista(NEW YORK) — In 2013, actress and singer Anna Kendrick scored a top 10 with “Cups (When I’m Gone),” from the movie Pitch Perfect. The song is still played all the time on the radio, and someone even auditioned with it on American Idol this month.  But while she continues to sing onscreen — currently in Into the Woods, next month in the movie musical The Last Five Years and later this year in Pitch Perfect 2 — Anna swears she’ll never capitalize on her “Cups” success by making an album.

Why? She finds the prospect “terrifying.”

“To be honest, I have been offered that opportunity in a couple different ways and it’s just not for me,” she tells ABC News Radio. “I just wanna get my brain around navigating the movie industry. The music industry is so terrifying to me, I just could not do it. It’s not for me.”

Anna says instead of using her voice to hit the pop charts, she prefers to use it to convince people that they don’t actually hate musicals, despite what they may think.  So far, she says, it seems to be working.

“I feel like…I’m hearing this phrase more than any other lately: ‘I’m not really a fan of musicals but I loved this,'” she tells ABC News Radio. “And whether they’re talking about Into the Woods [or] Pitch Perfect, I’m just so happy to see it.  Because to me, it doesn’t actually mean, ‘I don’t like musicals but I loved this.’  It means, ‘I haven’t really been exposed to musicals and I think I might have an appetite for them.'”

In particular, Anna says she seems to be able to persuade men that musicals aren’t so bad and she’s thrilled about that.

“I’m telling you, I’m so happy that the capacity to enjoy musicals is actually everywhere,” she laughs. “And that, y’know, the guy who says, ‘I don’t like musicals’ — I’m like, ‘You just haven’t seen the right one yet!’ And that’s really exciting to me.”

Looks like we’ll just have to be content with watching Anna and the Barden Bellas sing “When I’m Gone” in Pitch Perfect 2, which hits theaters May 15.
